| My Life As McDull (2001)
麥兒故事
Director: Toe Yuen
The 26th Hong Kong
International Film Festival “FIPRESCI Award” has been given to a local
animation My Life as McDull, directed by Toe Yuen, original
script written by Brian Tse and Alice Mak.
McDull is not the
brightest kid on the block, but he continuously tries to do his best to
please his mother. Still ti seems he may not be destined for great
things like she wishes, but McDull strives to try anyway.
The story focuses on
several tales about McDull and his early life. This is told as a
narrative reflection of a now adult McDull. These tales mix in creative
uses of Cantonese and lots of local culture. From tales about a turkey
dinner to dreams of following in San San's footsteps, McDull faces ups
and downs with his demanding but loving mother.
The songs featured in the film are clever and
catchy and are not overbearing as some musical animations tend to
become. The film's
animation is simple and colorful changing at times as stories change,
but reflecting the style of the original artwork. It uses some modern CG
animation is several scenes to depict the urban Hong Kong, but it
cleverly shows Hong Kong as the dirty metropolis it is rather than the
squeaky clean cityscape that many travel commercials like to depict.
The good-natured and gaumless piglet McDull has cheered up the lives
of kids, professors, housewives and CEOs, because he epitomises the
irrepressible and happy-go-lucky spirit of Hong Kong. His
no-holds-barred porcobiography is a frame-by-frame account of
life growing up in the slums of Shamshuipo, set against the colourful
canvass of a post-97 Hong Kong trudging along in spite of recession
woes. Swooping shots of bustling Kowloon streets, greasy cafés, plus
sights and smells of local flavour fuse with animation, live object
photography and 3-D computer graphics to provide 100% "Honkie"
entertainment.
