書呂剛之女呂昭華，經聖上為媒，與世交郭炎章訂下婚盟。炎章家道破落後，到府拜訪，兩人遇於門外酬時，互吐心聲。但呂父卻嫌貧重富，不許他們相見。一晚，桂英欲試探她對炎章之情，假冒炎章偷入蘭房，被呂父踫見，藉詞把炎章趕出家門，炎章誤會昭華嫌貧重富，一怒之下上京赴考。

及後，昭華發現真相，逐雪夜追蹤欲解釋，但不果，更被
誤認為殺死表哥之兇手，被判塞外充軍。兩年後炎章得中探花，被派與蠻夷修好。一天，昭華被充軍至塞外，二人在軍營重會，昭華多番解釋，但炎章卻不信昭華所言，更羞辱她一番，後徑桂英解釋，二人終冰釋前嫌，而昭華亦昭雪沉冤。
