Starring: Toshiro
Mifune, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Reiko Dan
An older doctor helps an arrogant young doctor
learn the true meaning of his profession.
Yuzo Kayama is a young doctor who is full of
himself - full of pride in his abilities and full of ambition to serve
the rich and prominent. But he has little interest in his patients and
little desire to really help people.
So he is not exactly thrilled to be sent to a
rural clinic for poor people, run by an autocratic older doctor known as
Red Beard (Toshiro Mifune). He does everything he can to escape what he
considers to be a prison sentence. Deep under his outer layers of
insolence and arrogance, though, a compassionate heart beats, and Red
Beard helps the young man come to grips with what is truly important.
Director Akira Kurosawa is known for fierce action
films such as The Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress, but here he
creates a very human drama with fine emotional shadings.
